I’m thinking of buying an expensive alienware ALX X58 and in it’s video detailing the hard drives it said i can use RAID 0 RAID 1 and solid state drives. I learned that the raid drives have two disks and they create copies of the files on the other, after that I’m lost. So what is the difference and what one would be good for mass storage and performance?
@Adrian:
So if I buy a RAID 0 with a RAID 1 how will that save the data? will it go to one specific drive first or is it random?
(continued)
So getting a "2TB (2 x 1TB) SATA 3Gb/s 7,200RPM 2 x 32MB Cache" In a RAID 0 is the best for performance and memory?

I need a handheld computing device running OpenOffice Calc (v. much preferred) — or MS Excel, if Calc isn’t an option — or some "equivalent" spreadheet software.
I prefer at least 320 x 480 pixels for the display, but can get by with something smaller.
It can have a QWERTY kybd that flips open to reveal the display (and, when closed, doubles as a protective cover), or the kybd can be digital (on the display), or the kybd can be on the front of the device.
Full recovery — meaning display of the last open spreadsheet page & complete functionality of the spreadsheet s/ware — from "sleep" mode needs to be well under 3 seconds.
Battery life needs to be <= 10 hours of normal spreadsheet use between recharges, and I don’t want a battery that develops "memory:" taking advantage of my battery’s full potential shouldn’t mean I have to fully deplete my battery before recharging it.
I don’t need wireless anything (gotta plug-in to recharge anyway), but a (USB/E-net) dock would be nice.
Regarding battery life:
Normal spreadsheet use for me means turning the device on, entering a series of numbers (never more than 84 cells, and likely not more than 16 even on a bad day).
After that, it could be a few minutes or a few hours before I’ll need to access and/or update the information — but when I need it, I will need it "right now."
I suppose I could augment the whole process with a pad and pen, but wouldn’t that defeat the point of having a handheld? I mean, if all I end up with is a calculator anyway, what’s the point?
My spread sheets are extremely simple: all I’ll be doing at first is entering production values, summing them and subtracting from a weekly target value to determine shortfall.
If I’m using Excel, "conditional formatting" can help me prioritize production at a glance (I haven’t yet figured out how to do this with Calc).
So I don’t need MP3 or video playback and all the other multimedia stuff: I just need a workhorse.
So I’m looking to buy a netbook in the near future, but then I look around and I see that solid state drives are supposed to be faster and more efficient, but they’re currently super-expensive. Should I just get a netbook with a hard drive now, or wait for SSDs to get cheaper?
Also, when will SSD drives start to get cheaper?
Can’t seem to find the model on my Panasonic HDTV (only have the remote and TV itself due to getting it as a gift from friends , used) and all I can find on it is "HDTV" , "BBE", and "TAU" . It’s 32 inches but I can’t find the model …
Need the model so I can set my laptop at the proper resolution when using it as a monitor..
i want a good laptop around 1000 to 1300 canadian dollars.im a student with low budget and i need a laptop which has good speed and good graphic card so i can also play games with it.and take it every where with me.
I’m a little confused
I’ve heard that you shouldn’t use a journalized filesystem on a solid state drive because they wear out faster, but I’ve also heard that they can last up to 100 years.
Which one is true?
I have used every single brand in mini dvds & none of them will play on anything. They will only play when they are in the camcorder. They won’t play on my laptop, dvd player, computer, or anything. Can anybody help me out please?
im planning to buy for a discounted price..thanks!
Yeah. i’ve been planning on buying a laptop for quite a while now. Thing is I’ve got a fixed budget of 0-950. I was eyeing the new DV7T hp pavilion. Good specs costs 1250 but that’l go down to roughly a thousand in sales or with coupons. Anyway, I’ve seen refurbished laptops with really good specs (sometimes higher than the one I’ve set up for the DV7T) with a hugh price difference. What’s normally priced at 1-1.5K’s tagged with 600-700 price. I’ve read some articles on the net assuring me of the quality of refurbished goods if they come from the manufactureres themselves. So now, I’m seriously considering buying a refurbished notebook over a new one but of course, I need 1st hand advise from people who have actually owned a refurbished laptop. So? What do you think?
I am looking for a secondary drive to put in my desktop, and I want it to be flash, NOT magnetic. I’m looking for something at least 4GB, and I haven’t been able to find one for less than 0. I realize the high price is because of how recent this technology is, but just let me know if you happen to know of any.
Does anyone have a panasonic notebook/laptop? if so which one and do you like it…
…i think it is awesome that they have touchscreens do any other "people"(sony, hp, dell) make laptops with touchscreens?
Hi, I’m going to college next year, and I’d like to get a student discount on a laptop, I’ve been told I can. How does this work? Does it work at retail places like circuit city, or best buy? do I have to buy it directly from the dealer?
Thanks
If i buy a solid state drive and install my OS (Win. XP Pro w/ sp 3) on it and use another drive for storage will my speed increase in using it.. or will it be a waste of money?
My laptop is Panasonic CF-M2 and the language of my laptop on the first screen is chinese and I cant understand it. So want to change it into english because I’m planning to reformat my laptop but I cant understand the language. What should I do? Please help me. Thanks!
